From early November, Tokyo puts on its winter lights. Tree-lined avenues turn champagne gold, amusement parks are covered in millions of LEDs, and office districts that empty out by 7pm on a normal weeknight fill up with people taking photos. If you’re planning a trip between November and February, the Tokyo winter illumination 2026 season is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to enjoy the city after dark. Most of the big displays are free.

The hard part is the timing. Some displays end on Christmas Day, others run into spring, and many of the online guides still show last year’s dates. We checked each organizer’s 2026 announcement or a reliable event listing before including it. Where a 2026 detail hasn’t been confirmed yet, we say so instead of guessing.

Tokyo Winter Illumination 2026 at a Glance

Here’s the short version. All dates are for the 2026–27 season and come from announcements published in autumn 2026. Organizers can still change them, so check the official site before you build a night around one display.

One quick tip on timing. Tokyo’s sunset in early December is around 4:30pm, and most illuminations switch on between 16:00 and 17:30. Realistically you can see three areas in one evening, or two if one of them is a big ticketed park.

The Best Free Tokyo Illuminations in Central Tokyo

These are the classic Christmas lights in Tokyo. They’re all on or close to the subway, they’re free, and you can walk through them on your way to dinner.

1. Marunouchi Illumination 2026 (Tokyo Station)

If you only see one display, make it this one. The Marunouchi Illumination lights the trees along Marunouchi Naka-dori, the stone-paved avenue that runs from near Tokyo Station toward Yurakucho. Every tree is wrapped in the district’s own “champagne gold” color. Because Naka-dori is lined with luxury boutiques and restaurant terraces, it feels more like a Parisian boulevard than a typical Christmas market.

  • Dates: November 12, 2026 – February 14, 2027
  • Hours: Last season it ran 16:00–23:00, extended to midnight in December. 2026 hours had not been published at the time of writing.
  • Nearest stations: Tokyo Station (Marunouchi side) or Yurakucho Station
  • Extra for 2026: The “MARUNOUCHI BRIGHT HOLIDAY” Harry Potter–themed decorations run around the Marunouchi Building until December 25, 2026.

Insider tip: walk it from north to south, starting at Tokyo Station and ending at Yurakucho. You’ll finish next to the Hibiya illuminations, and the bars and izakaya under the Yurakucho train tracks are just a few minutes away.

2. HIBIYA Magic Time Illumination (Tokyo Midtown Hibiya)

Hibiya is right next to Marunouchi, so it’s easy to see both in one walk. Last season the lights covered Hibiya Step Plaza, the 6th-floor Park View Garden and Hibiya Naka-dori. The 6th-floor garden has a good view over Hibiya Park and the Imperial Palace area at night.

  • Dates: Runs through February 28, 2027. Event listings give a November 12 start, but we haven’t seen that in the official announcement yet.
  • Hours: Last season it ran 16:00–23:00. Check the official site for 2026.
  • Nearest stations: Hibiya Station, or a short walk from Yurakucho

3. Roppongi Hills Keyakizaka Illumination

Keyakizaka is the street you’ve probably seen in photos: a gently sloping avenue of zelkova trees lit in white and blue, with Tokyo Tower glowing at the bottom of the hill. It’s one of the most photographed winter scenes in the city, and it’s busiest on weekend evenings in December.

  • Dates: November 5 – December 25, 2026
  • Hours: 17:00–22:00 (the opening night may start later). Note that this is an hour shorter than last season, when the lights stayed on until 23:00.
  • Nearest station: Roppongi Station (Hibiya Line or Oedo Line)
  • Bonus: The 66 Plaza illumination at Roppongi Hills runs from November 13 to December 27, 2026, 17:00–24:00 (until 23:00 on the final day).

For the classic Tokyo Tower shot, stand on the pedestrian bridge or the sidewalk near the top of the slope and look downhill. Please don’t stop in the middle of the road. Staff move people along on busy nights.

4. Midtown Christmas 2026 (Tokyo Midtown, Roppongi)

Tokyo Midtown is a 10-minute walk from Roppongi Hills, so most people see them together. In past seasons the lawn behind the complex has been turned into a large light display synced to music, with a Christmas tree and an outdoor ice rink nearby.

  • Dates: November 26 – December 25, 2026
  • Nearest station: Roppongi Station (direct underground access) or Nogizaka Station

5. TOKYO SNOW DOME CITY (Tokyo Dome City)

Tokyo Dome City’s winter illumination is billed as one of the largest in Tokyo, with more than one million bulbs this season. It’s spread around the Tokyo Dome amusement area and the LaQua complex, so it works well if you’re traveling with kids or want something more playful than a tree-lined avenue. This year’s display also features Sanrio’s Cinnamoroll.

  • Dates: November 19, 2026 – February 28, 2027
  • Hours: 17:00–24:00 (may change depending on sunset times and events)
  • Entry: Free
  • Nearest stations: Suidobashi Station (JR or Mita Line) or Korakuen Station

6. Tokyo Skytree Town Dream Christmas

At the foot of Tokyo Skytree, the plazas around Tokyo Solamachi get Christmas lights and a seasonal market, and in past seasons the tower itself has switched to special Christmas lighting designs. If you’re already planning a night view from the observation decks, this is the season to go.

  • Dates: November 5 – December 25, 2026
  • Nearest station: Tokyo Skytree Station or Oshiage Station
  • Entry: Free to walk around. Observation deck tickets are separate.

Paid Tokyo Illuminations Worth the Ticket

The ticketed illuminations are a different experience. They’re bigger, more immersive, and more of a full evening out than a stop on a walk. They also tend to be outside the city center, so plan for the travel time.

7. Yoyogi Forest of Lights (Yoyogi Park)

Yoyogi Forest of Lights, sponsored by ACN, is a walk-through light installation on the cycling course area of Yoyogi Park. Unlike the free street illuminations, it’s ticketed.

  • Dates: November 13, 2026 – January 11, 2027
  • Hours: 17:30–22:00, last entry 21:00
  • Tickets: Sold in advance on the official site. November tickets went on sale October 1, and tickets for December onward on October 15.
  • Nearest stations: Harajuku Station or Meiji-jingumae Station

Since it’s next to Harajuku and Shibuya, it’s easy to follow with dinner and drinks.

8. Tokyo Mega Illumination (Oi Racecourse) — Final Season

Tokyo Mega Illumination fills the infield of Oi Racecourse with themed light zones. It’s very large and very photogenic. The 2026–27 run is billed as its final season for now. It’s the ninth season, and the event will pause after this winter while the racecourse is redeveloped. If you’ve been meaning to go, this is the year.

  • Dates: October 31, 2026 – January 10, 2027, open 53 days in total. It’s closed on Oi race days and on December 26, December 27 and January 1.
  • Hours: 16:30–21:00, last entry 20:00
  • Tickets: Prices vary by date. Advance tickets are sold through the official site and major platforms, including KKday and JTB.
  • Access: 2 minutes on foot from Oi Keibajo-mae Station (Tokyo Monorail, from Hamamatsucho), or about 12 minutes from Tachiaigawa Station (Keikyu Line)

Check the race calendar before you go. Turning up on a race night is the most common mistake visitors make here.

9. Yomiuriland Jewellumination 2026 “Growing Light”

Yomiuriland is an amusement park in Inagi, in western Tokyo. Every winter it covers the whole park, roller coasters included, in jewel-toned lights designed by the lighting designer Motoko Ishii. The 2026 edition is the 17th season. Its theme, “Growing Light,” is about plants sprouting and growing, and it introduces a new green “jewelry color” for the first time in two years.

  • Dates: October 29, 2026 – April 4, 2027 (138 days)
  • Hours: Around 16:00–20:30, varying by season. Check the park calendar for closed days.
  • Tickets: Evening admission is ticketed. Check the official Yomiuriland site for current prices.
  • Access: Keio Yomiuri-Land Station, then the park’s “Sky Shuttle” gondola up the hill

This is the one to pick if you want rides and lights together, especially with kids. It’s about 30–40 minutes from Shinjuku, so it really takes the whole evening.

10. Yebisu Garden Place Baccarat Chandelier

For more than two decades, Yebisu Garden Place in Ebisu has put up a huge Baccarat crystal chandelier in its central plaza every winter. Last season’s chandelier was about 5 meters tall with 250 lights, displayed from November 2025 to January 12, 2026. When we checked, the 2026 dates hadn’t been announced yet, so look at the Yebisu Garden Place website before you go.

Ebisu is also one of the best neighborhoods in Tokyo for a grown-up night out. Our Ebisu night guide covers the bars and yokocho nearby.

Free Light-Ups You Can See Every Night

You don’t have to wait for a seasonal event to see Tokyo lit up. Two landmarks light up every night of the year, and both look their best on clear, cold winter evenings.

  • Tokyo Tower is lit from sunset until midnight. See our Tokyo Tower at night guide for the light-up schedule and the best viewpoints.
  • Rainbow Bridge in Odaiba is lit nightly, and Odaiba’s waterfront gives you a view of the bay and the city skyline together. Dress for the wind. It’s noticeably colder by the water.

How to Plan One Night of Tokyo Winter Illuminations

The most efficient route through the central lights follows the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line, which conveniently links Hibiya, Roppongi and Ebisu.

  1. 16:30 — Tokyo Station. Start at the Marunouchi exit as the lights come on. Walk south down Naka-dori (about 20–25 minutes at a slow pace).
  2. 17:15 — Hibiya. Finish the walk at Tokyo Midtown Hibiya and go up to the 6th-floor garden for the view.
  3. 18:00 — Ride to Roppongi. Take the Hibiya Line from Hibiya to Roppongi. Walk up Keyakizaka, then head to Tokyo Midtown.
  4. 19:30 — Dinner. Eat in Roppongi, or ride two stops on the Hibiya Line to Ebisu.
  5. 21:00 onward — Drinks. Keyakizaka switches off at 22:00 this season, so see it before dinner, not after.

If you want to add a ticketed illumination, do it on a different night. Yomiuriland and Oi Racecourse each need their own evening.

Practical Tips for the Tokyo Winter Illumination 2026 Season

Avoid December 24 and weekends if you can. In Japan, Christmas Eve is a couples’ holiday, not a family one, and the best-known illumination streets get packed. Weeknights in late November and early December are much calmer. December 26 onward is quieter still, and several displays keep running into February.

Dress warmer than you think. December nights in Tokyo often drop to the low single digits Celsius. You’ll be standing still for photos, and that’s when the cold gets to you. Gloves that work with a touchscreen are worth bringing.

Check the end date, not just the start date. This is where most visitors get caught out. Roppongi Hills, Midtown and Skytree all end on December 25. Marunouchi, Hibiya and Tokyo Dome City continue into February, and Yomiuriland runs until April.

Use an IC card. A Suica or PASMO card (or the mobile version) makes hopping between areas easy. If you’re out late, check last train times before your final drink. Most lines stop running around midnight.

Combine lights with a warm-up stop. The best illumination nights end in a small, steamy izakaya with hot sake and oden. For ideas, see our guide to Tokyo nightlife in winter, and our Christmas Eve night spots guide if you’ll be in town on the 24th.

For official listings in English, the Tokyo Convention & Visitors Bureau’s GO TOKYO winter illumination guide is a useful second check.

See Tokyo After the Lights Go Off

The illuminations are a great way to start a winter evening. But once Keyakizaka switches off at 22:00, the most interesting part of Tokyo is just getting going: the standing bars, hidden counters and alleys that don’t show up in any illumination guide.

If you’d like to keep going with someone who knows where to go, our Tokyo After 10 nightlife private tour picks up where the lights leave off. A local guide takes you to the bars and back-alley spots locals actually use, handles the ordering and etiquette, and gets you home before the last train if you want. It’s the warmest way to end a cold Tokyo night.
